# Supergraphics generator

One huge word folds across the sheet as paint folds across a wall corner. Stripes and flat wedges take the same fold and stop dead on a cut.

## Design choices

- **Diagonal axis** (`layout.diagonal`): Composition driven by tilted axes and oblique movement. “Layout”: Valley fold. https://stylogeny.com/design-choices/diagonal-axis/
- **Rotated & vertical setting** (`type.rotated`): Lines set at angles, stacked or running vertically. “Layout”: Along the long edge. https://stylogeny.com/design-choices/rotated-and-vertical-setting/
- **Illusion of depth** (`space.depth-illusion`): Perspective, overlap, shadow or parallax create a z-axis. “Layout”: Round a corner. https://stylogeny.com/design-choices/illusion-of-depth/
- **Rules & bars** (`ornament.rules-bars`): Thick bars, lines and dots as structural accents. “Layout”: In bands. Measured on the opening picture: long thin shapes 11 with “In bands”, and 1 to 6 with the other options. https://stylogeny.com/design-choices/rules-and-bars/
- **Angular & zigzag** (`form.angular`): Chevrons, zigzags, sunbursts and faceted shards. “Layout”: Zigzag. https://stylogeny.com/design-choices/angular-and-zigzag/
- **Geometric primitives** (`form.primitives`): Circle, square and triangle as building blocks. Set by “Disc and dots”. https://stylogeny.com/design-choices/geometric-primitives/
- **Flat fields** (`color.flat-fields`): Unmodulated areas of colour. Set by “Colour roles”. https://stylogeny.com/design-choices/flat-fields/
- **Full bleed** (`layout.full-bleed`): Image or colour runs off every edge; no protective margins. Always. https://stylogeny.com/design-choices/full-bleed/
- **Extreme scale contrast** (`space.scale-contrast`): Very large against very small elements, for drama and order. Always. https://stylogeny.com/design-choices/extreme-scale-contrast/
- **Type as image** (`type.oversized`): Letters so large they become the picture. Always. https://stylogeny.com/design-choices/type-as-image/

## How it works

- One word, far larger than the sheet can hold, folds across it as paint folds across a wall corner; stripes, wedges and flats take the same fold, keep a channel of bare ground from the letters and stop dead on a straight cut.

It never does:

- Gradients, shading, outlines, texture and fine detail: everything is a flat colour with a hard edge, and the smallest mark is a dot about 7 % of the sheet across. It sets no second line of type and copies no particular wall or poster.

## Controls

- `word` Word (default "WALL"): Left as “WALL”, each variation picks its own word; type yours to set it. Long words break into two or three rows; short ones grow until a stem reaches its limit.
- `layout` Layout (any | valley | ridge | edge | wrap | bands | zigzag; default any): Where the word goes and which way it folds. Each layout also places the stripes, wedges and disc in its own way. In bands: Measured on the opening picture: long thin shapes 11 with “In bands”, and 1 to 6 with the other options.
- `fold` Fold position (-0.3–0.3, default 0): Moves the fold along the word, as a share of the sheet, from where the variation put it.
- `slope1` Slope before the fold (0–2, default 1): How steeply the word runs before the fold, times the variation’s own slope. 0 is level.
- `slope2` Slope after the fold (0–2, default 1): How steeply the word runs after the fold, times the variation’s own slope. 0 is level. Measured on the opening picture, from 0 to 2: edges on the diagonal 11% → 13%.
- `stripes` Stripes (0–7, default 3): How many stripes run beside the word before the cut, as far as they fit without going fine. 0 leaves none.
- `marks` Disc and dots (both | disc | dots | none; default both): The round marks: a large disc cut by the frame, and a few dots in a corner triangle.
- `roles` Colour roles (set | swap | word | reverse; default set): Which colour does which job. The palette itself stays as chosen.
- `effect` Movement (both | fold | stripes; default both): Slow only. The fold slides along the word and everything follows it, or the stripes travel out from the word, or both.

## About Supergraphics

Supergraphics are oversized letters, stripes and flat shapes painted straight onto walls, floors and ceilings, wrapping round corners so that a room reads larger or differently shaped. They date from the mid-1960s and later became a standard tool of signs and wayfinding in buildings.

This generator treats the sheet as such a wall. Word and shapes lie on one folded surface, so the stripes and wedges stay parallel to the letters, with a channel of bare ground between them. Six layouts decide where the word goes: dipping into a valley fold, hanging from a ridge, along the long edge, round a corner, in bands or on a zigzag.

Type any word. Long words break into rows and short ones grow until a stem reaches its limit. When it moves, it moves slowly: the fold slides along the word and the stripes travel away from it, because areas this large must never switch quickly.
